Black Family homeschool educators & scholars virtual teach-in
July 20 -24, 2020

Learning is a life-long journey that allows each of us to grow and expand awareness of ourselves and those in our circles.

When it comes to exploring learning pathways outside of compulsory education, it's not as simple as changing your physical location or purchasing new books, it's a call to action for an internal shift. The individual barriers around "what learning is", are vital to unpacking in order to respectfully engage this work.

Belief barriers to unschooling/sde:
  • Compulsory education is the sole or primary way of learning
  • Young people are not capable of learning what they need
  • Play is not apart of the learning process, especially beyond early childhood years
  • Existing perspectives around home education
  • Adherence to indoctrination of colonizing practices
  • Generational trauma around parenting and education approaches

If you are a parent or educator who carriers any of the barriers above, it's all good. We've all got belief barriers to unpack and together we can shift our practice toward liberation and ancestral healing.

When you make a commitment to shift your practice, you are also "opting in" to do the work. Centering young people in the learning process does not exempt the parents and adults in their lives. In fact, it is paramount.

Strewing: Confronting Your Fears (W)

Self-Directed Education/Unschooling offers amazing benefits but can also bring levels of unsureness. Those overt and covert moments that bring challenges, fears, and doubt, have the capacity to give you pause and at times, come full stop. Through “strewing” (scattering objects that spark interest and curiosity), you will connect in real-time with all the feels and utilize what’s speaking to you in the moment to define our time together.

FLOW

Exercises involving movement, writing prompts and open discussion will center the workshop. As we begin to unpacking those feels and its impact, we'll be exploring ways to shift our practice toward respectful parenting, deepening connections with our young people, ourselves, and beyond.

The Strewing workshop is a 90 minute workshop, suitable for groups of five to thirty sde/unschooling centered parents and educators.

Gear-up (w)

The decision to embrace Self-Directed Education or Unschooling is not a method to follow but a path toward liberation. There is beauty in exploring how learning happens but can take an unwelcome detour when schoolishness intercepts. That same beauty can be difficult to embrace when you're filled to the brim with frustration. It's not about finding the perfect solution but understanding how our own perceptions  center the learning process, its impact, and ways to shift practices.

If you're already engaged in sde/unschooling practices, you may have joined a local co-op or group, and/or enrolled your young person into a learning center (SDE, Sudbury, Agile, or Democratic school).  Are you experiencing pain points around groups or center's are engaging the learning process around the following?
  • How I was Raised vs. What's Happening Now
  • Your Expectations vs. Centering Young People
  • Quantitative vs Qualitative Learning Processes

If this speaks you, it's time to  Gear-Up and dig deeper! This workshop is designed to tap into those pain points through exploring the impact around oppressive and colonizing language embedded during our childhood through adulthood, interrupting relationships within ourselves and become the foundation of our parenting approaches.

The Gear-Up workshop is a raw, unfiltered experience that will flow based on what feels present for you through writing prompts, discussion and movement. This workshop is NOT designed as a pre-packaged solution to alternative education. It is an offering to look beyond the symptoms of our actions and behaviors, address the fears and challenges of parent/adulthood in sde/unschooling spaces, and explore tools that support pathways to liberation.
