Virtual Meetup

Welcome!

Firstly, let's address the elephant in the room, what is deschooling?

"Deschooling" as per the world wide web is "a term rooted in the beliefs of Ivan Illich, is the shift from a traditional, government-influenced institution of schooling to a less-restricted method of learning that focuses on being educated by one's natural curiosities." Some recommendations around this work even provide a mathematical equation for how long we should engage this process.

Proposed equation: one month for every year a young person was in traditional school

When stepping into anything new or outside of our comfort zones, a transition period is always a good way to go. We see it in so many areas, taking on a new job position, getting to know someone, sending our young people to school or not school and much more. The idea that there is a predefined timeline to decondition and acclimate oneself to a new learning pathway is schoolish is inself. If you decide to join our group, we'll get into what schoolishness means and how it shows beyond the walls of colonized education.

Throughout my own deschooling journey as an unschooling parent, this process has and continues to create opportunities to pivot my parenting practice as well as a deeper understanding of myself and ways I navigate relationships with people and things. This work comes with beautiful stretching but what it does not have is a timeline for completion. It's a life-long journey that is naturally embedded in our daily living, which brings us to how ELN defines Deschooling.

Deschooling is a life-long, self-paced journey to unpack, acknowledge, and decenter harmful practices that affect the ways we engage and hold space in relationships through deep questioning and pivot practice toward respectful and trust-centered relationships.

So, without further ado, ELN, in collaboration with Melissa Bingham and Bria Bloom is thrilled to extend an invitation for you to join our cost-free Deschooling: It's A Thing monthly meetups!
